The week in review...

I found this 40k Basilisk at a Game Convention flea market for ten dollars. Some young player seemed quite hurried to get it to the table top and various hatches were missing and the treads on both sides of the body did not line up on the chassis.

I thought I would make a nice Ork vehicle out of it but finally decided it would be cool as a terrain piece. I decided to go for that old wreck that had been on the battlefield for decades, something you might find now in the desert.

After spending some time reassembling the vehicle I cut out the bow bolter or bow machine gun. I striped off some fender guards and found some new hatches of a old Chinese BTR 50 kit.I drilled some holes in the gun shield. I than began the arduous task of deciding how to achieve the rust effect on the vehicle.

There are tons of complicated and easy ways to do such on the web and I finally decided  on the following.

I primed the vehicle black.

I then air brushed the hull Model Air Vellejo  FS30108 Burnt Umber.

After the paint dried, I painted Fire Dragon Bright from GW where I thought rust would be. I took a look at some old images of cars and other rusted vehicles to give me an idea. I then mixed a little White to lighten the orange even more and hit the high points of the orange I just painted.

Typhus Corrosion is a technical paint from GW. It is designed for the weathered look but and leaves a grit across the vehicle. I watered this down one part Typhus corrosion to two parts water and still thought in the end I could have watered it more. Don't hesitate to water it down a little on the vehicle itself if its just too dark This did achieve the basic effect  I was looking for but I still hit the orange again in several places I felt were too dark. I like the rust effect on the bullet holes on the gun shield .

Over all I am pleased with the effect but have to decide whether to have the main gun on it or blown off the hull..My theory with terrain is it has to have a clear functional use in providing cover and the gun would make a nice barricade style piece if it was blown off.

Maybe I'll figure it out next week..
